April 26, 2017 - Kingston Impact's Team Cross defied its pre-tournament ranking to capture the silver medal in Ontario Cup U14 Major Bantam Boys basketball championship play this past weekend in London.
Playing in Division 5 -- for teams ranked 33rd to 40th in the tournament that involved 126 teams split into 16 divisions -- the No. 37 Impact went 3-0 in Pool A preliminary play before dropping a 68-52 decision to the No. 34 Niagara Falls Red Raiders in Sunday's gold/silver medal game.
The Impact, ranked No. 5 among Division 5's eight teams, topped the division's top-ranked Blessed Sacrament 57-47 in their tournament opener on Friday. Kingston then got past B.C. Troyka, ranked No. 4 in the division, 57-45 on Saturday morning. A 65-42 win over the Milton Stags gave the Impact first place in Pool A and a berth in the gold/silver game.
Niagara Falls, ranked second in the division, went 3-0 in Pool B en route to its berth in the final.
Kingston also had a second team at the tournament -- Impact Platt -- and it went 0-3 in Division 14 Pool A preliminary play before getting past Stratford Black 56-53 in Sunday's playoff game between the two pools' fourth-place teams.
The Impact, the top-ranked team in the division for teams ranked 105th to 112th overall, were downed 43-39 by the Orangeville Hawks North on Friday, 46-35 by the South Windsor Warriors on Saturday morning, and 50-31 by Collingwood No. on Saturday afternoon.
