Major Midget Boys win Silver at Ontario Cup

The Major Midget Boys #1 were rewarded for their best effort of the season with a silver medal in the Bartlett Gym at Queen's University for the Division 2 Ontario Cup on May 29-31. The boys were ranked 13 in Ontario before the weekend, which was the highest in club history for the age group, and seeded 5th in the tournament.

Kingston opened the tournament up with some hot shooting as 9 players found the scoresheet, and smothering defense including 3 drawn charges on the first 5 possessions, in a convincing 62-43 upset of the #1 seeded Fire Basketball of Scarborough.

The boys carried this momentum into their next game - an instant OBA classic - against season-long rivals Stoney Creek NYB. The game took 3 emotional overtime periods to finish 71-68, which included two improbable 3-point buzzer beaters by shooting guard Dylan Medeiros: a fading leaner to tie at the end of 1OT, and an absolute long bomb to win in 3OT. The theme of extra basketball continued on Saturday afternoon as Impact's final game of pool play ended with a frantic 10 pt comeback in the final minutes to push yet another game to overtime against the Guelph CYO Knights.

Jack Rowlatt came up huge in the extra period scoring nearly half of Kingston's OT points in the 64-56 win. After finishing pool play 3-0 having played four extra periods of basketball, Impact met a challenge they couldn't overcome with a quick and talented Toronto Basketball Club in the gold medal final. Tied late 45-45, the game slipped away as the offense dried up, and Toronto came away with the gold medal by a score of 57-48.

The Division 2 Silver medal - for an overall ranking of 10th in the province - was a great cap to the season for the Major Midget Boys, but the year isn't quite done yet. They will be heading to Oakville on June 6 to conclude regular season play in the Amateur Basketball Syndicate league, where they currently sit in 2nd place with a record of 5-1. The playoffs are on June 13, and their progress can be followed at

  • Kingston 62 - Fire 43
  • Kingston 71 - Stoney Creek 68 (3OT)
  • Kingston 64 - Guelph CYO 56 (OT)
  • Gold Medal: Toronto 57 - Kingston 48
